Dee’s dedication to his music is inspiring to the students and is something that most of them will remember for years to come. Some parents have written letters saying that their child gave up their school instrument but asked their parents to sign them up again after seeing Dee’s presentation.

Dee’s virtuoso musicianship and friendly persona make for an interesting and enjoyable day for all.

Classical Music of North India

Using authentic Indian instruments as well as western instruments.

Presented by Dee Harris and Viral Pandya
A Concert and Workshop (suggested for junior high, high school, and college levels).

Raga
The classical music forms popular in North India, which predates our Western Medieval Period.

A Brief view of what a Raga is:

Structural Features:
Explanation of what you are hearing when you listen to an Indian recording or live concert. Demonstrations include the Five Essential Stages of a Raga: Alap, Jor, Jhalla, Gats, and end Jhalla.

Time Cycles:
When the composition enters the Raga, the artist may pick from a number of time cycles: 6 beats, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 up to 16 beats are some of the popular ones. Viral Pandya demonstrates these on Tabla (North Indian Hand Drums).

Instruments:
Dee’s specialty is slide guitar of North India but other instruments are used during the demonstration and concert such as Medieval Lute, Mandolin and others. Also if interested, a presentation of the most popular North Indian instrument the Sitar, Sarod, and Tambora of India.

Performance:
An actual performance of a Raga using all of the above concepts.

Improvisation:
Explaining improvisation concepts as compared to Western ideas.
